Tuesday/Wednesday 28/29 March

Feeling a bit short of training miles I got itchy feet just before midnight on Tuesday and set off on my Highbury & Islington circuit, despite its intrinsic dodginess in the dark. For slightly improved safety I decided to expand the circuit from 3 to 5 miles, sticking more to main roads.

Another valuable lesson learned: always wear jogging suits with at least one ZIPPED pocket. It’s easy to be tempted into shrugging on running gear just because it looks good. But one must have a house key and preferably an emergency tenner. Though aware of the risk of relying on simple gravity to prevent these two essentials from jumping out of my jacket pocket, I figured thus: “knowing my luck, the danger is of the tenner blowing away in the wind. If I wrap the tenner tightly around the key ring, it will stay put.”

Little did I know it would be the key ring that would do a runner, leaving my fiscal wealth intact.

Transported to endorphin heaven by deafening Ipod music I only realised the key’s absence on arriving home 50 minutes later. Automatically I leaned on the doorbell, prompting grumpy complaints from my folks who had just gone to bed.

Though a fallback duplicate key was fortunately available, I immediately felt irked by the loss of my first key on its perfectly co-ordinated matching black key ring, and determined to retrace my steps in a vain attempt at retrieval.

The black keyring was perfectly camouflaged in the blackness overhead, all around and underfoot. As I methodically raked my earlier circuit scanning for the golden key and hoping for a miracle, I realised the futility of the task but pursued, as always, the impossible - to the bitter end.

So, a five mile jog followed by a five mile trudge: probably the story of my life.
